Casino wagering requirements define how much qualifying play a bonus demands before bonus-linked funds can be withdrawn. The multiplier is only half the calculation. You also need the wagering base, game contribution, maximum bet, expiry and cashout rules. A 35x offer can require $3,500 or $7,000 of bets from the same $100 deposit.
TL;DR
A 35x wagering requirement means 35 times a defined base, not necessarily 35 times your deposit.
On a $100 bonus, 35x bonus-only wagering requires $3,500 of qualifying bets. On a $100 deposit plus a $100 bonus, 35x deposit-plus-bonus wagering requires $7,000.
Game contribution can multiply the real amount you must stake. If a game contributes 20%, every $10 bet adds only $2 to the wagering meter.
Maximum-bet, excluded-game, expiry and maximum-cashout rules can matter as much as the multiplier.
In Great Britain, covered incentives offered by Gambling Commission licensees have been capped at 10x bonus funds since 19 January 2026. That rule does not set a worldwide standard.
What is a casino wagering requirement?
A casino wagering requirement is the amount of qualifying bets you must place before funds connected to a promotion become withdrawable. It is usually written as a multiplier such as 10x, 20x or 35x. The calculation is the multiplier times the amount defined in the offer's full terms.
The important word is qualifying. Wagering is turnover, not a target balance and not the amount you are expected to lose. A $3,500 requirement means the value of eligible wagers must reach $3,500. It does not mean you need $3,500 in your account at once.
The basic formula is:
wagering base x multiplier = qualifying turnover required
Before using it, find the sentence that defines the wagering base. The headline "35x wagering" is incomplete without that sentence.
What does 35x wagering mean?
Suppose you deposit $100 and receive a 100% match, giving you a $100 bonus. Two offers can both advertise 35x and create very different obligations.
Offer wording | Wagering base | Calculation | Qualifying bets required |
|---|---|---|---|
35x bonus only | $100 bonus | $100 x 35 | $3,500 |
35x deposit + bonus | $100 + $100 | $200 x 35 | $7,000 |
The second offer requires twice as much turnover even though the advertised multiplier is identical. This is why comparing two bonuses by the multiplier alone does not work.
Other bases also appear. Free-spin winnings may carry their own multiplier. Cashback may be credited as restricted bonus money. A no-deposit award may apply wagering to the award, the resulting winnings, or both under different rules. Read the offer-specific terms and the general bonus terms together.
Game contribution changes the effective requirement
Not every game necessarily moves the wagering meter at the same rate. A promotion might count eligible slots at 100%, a table game at 20%, and an excluded game at 0%. Those percentages describe progress towards the requirement, not the game's return to player.
Take a $100 bonus with 35x bonus-only wagering. The qualifying target is $3,500.
Game contribution | Credit from a $10 bet | Total stakes needed to credit $3,500 |
|---|---|---|
100% | $10 | $3,500 |
50% | $5 | $7,000 |
20% | $2 | $17,500 |
0% | $0 | The game makes no progress |
These are arithmetic examples, not predictions of what you will win or lose. Results remain uncertain, and more wagering means more exposure to the game's house edge and volatility.
Check whether contribution is calculated from the stake, the settled result, or another operator-defined amount. If the terms list excluded games or providers, opening one of them may make no progress or may breach the promotion altogether.
Six bonus terms to read with the multiplier
1. Maximum bet
Many promotions cap the size of each bet while bonus wagering is active. The relevant amount may be per spin, hand or round. Check whether the interface prevents an oversized bet or whether the operator reviews it only after a withdrawal request.
Do not assume the normal game limit is the bonus limit. Save the exact rule before playing. If currencies are converted, find out whether the cap is fixed in your account currency or converted at the time of the bet.
2. Maximum cashout
A maximum-cashout rule limits how much can be withdrawn from bonus play even when the account balance is higher. It is especially important for free spins and no-deposit awards, but the only reliable answer is the rule attached to the specific offer.
Record whether the cap applies to total withdrawal, net winnings, bonus-derived winnings or a multiple of the bonus. Those are different calculations.
3. Expiry
An offer can set one deadline for claiming the bonus and another for completing wagering. Record the date, time and time zone. A countdown inside an account is useful, but it should agree with the written terms you accepted.
4. Eligible and excluded games
Game contribution and game eligibility are separate questions. A game can contribute 0% without being prohibited, or it can be expressly excluded. Check providers, game modes, jackpot titles and live games rather than relying on the lobby category.
5. Balance order and cancellation
Find out whether cash or bonus funds are used first, what happens when you request a withdrawal early, and whether cancelling the bonus removes only promotional funds or also removes related winnings. If the answer is unclear, ask support in writing before you place a bet.
6. Verification and payment restrictions
Some offers exclude particular deposit methods or require identity checks before a withdrawal. The promotion does not override the operator's general account, anti-money-laundering or restricted-country rules. Our separate guide explains why a no-KYC label may not prevent a later identity request.
A worked bonus example
Imagine an offer with these hypothetical terms:
Deposit: $50
Bonus: $50
Wagering: 35x bonus only
Eligible slots: 100% contribution
Table games: 20% contribution
Maximum bonus bet: $5
Completion window: seven days
Maximum cashout: $500
The starting requirement is $50 x 35 = $1,750 of qualifying bets. If every eligible bet receives 100% contribution, $1,750 of stakes completes the meter. If every bet receives 20% contribution, $8,750 of stakes is needed to credit the same $1,750.
Completing the meter does not guarantee a $500 withdrawal. The account still needs a remaining balance, the maximum-bet rule must have been followed, the games must be eligible, and any account or verification requirements still apply. The $500 figure is a ceiling, not a promised outcome.
The Great Britain 10x rule
Since 19 January 2026, Social Responsibility Code 5.1.1 prevents Gambling Commission licensees from applying wagering requirements above 10 times bonus funds to covered incentives. The Commission gives a simple example: a £10 bonus at 50x would otherwise require £500 of play-through.
This rule is jurisdiction-specific. It should not be applied to a site merely because the site is written in English or accepts pounds. Verify the operator, the domain and the licence that covers the offering. Our licence-checking guide explains how.
The limit also does not make every 10x offer suitable. Maximum bets, game contribution, expiry, cashout limits and the treatment of deposits still matter. The Advertising Standards Authority and Committee of Advertising Practice say significant promotion conditions should be clear and upfront when omitting them is likely to mislead.
The seven-line checklist before you claim a bonus
Copy these seven lines and fill them from the terms:
Wagering multiplier: ___x
Wagering base: bonus / deposit / deposit + bonus / winnings / other
Game contribution: ___% for the games I intend to play
Maximum bet: ___ per spin, hand or round
Completion deadline and time zone: ___
Maximum cashout or conversion cap: ___
Effect of cancellation or early withdrawal: ___
If any line cannot be answered from the documents available before opt-in, the cost of the offer is not fully stated. A support answer can clarify the rule, but save it. Do not replace the written promotion with a favourable assumption.
